This tells you if you have a scent in your mouthMy daughter 5 used it after brushing her teeth and it had a bad smell reading when actually her muth smelled of toothpaste I smelled it myself it was nice fresh and mintyIt's not effective in detecting bad smell because when her mouth was smelly it gave the same reading as above
