Fact intensive read

This a fact-intensive read, written in more of a journalistic style, then a story-telling mode. At times, you sense that the writer considers Cristiano to be entirely narcissistic, and selfish and leaves me the reader to question as to why he wrote this book because he is fairly negative about the subject of this biography.

Ronaldo: The Villain...

This book reads like Ronaldo stole the author's girlfriend. Seriously, I lost count of how many times the author described Ronaldo as doing something "like a child." If I hadn't watched all of his games myself, I might have put this book down with the impression that Ronaldo was a hindrance to the teams he played for and any success he experienced was a result of vanity and narcissism. The sheer historical and legendary scale of Ronaldo's success as a player is muted by the writing. But even then, anything impressive that Ronaldo has done, the author manages to find a negative. Ronaldo scores the game winner...but he didn't defend enough before that and then he sounded slightly arrogant in an interview afterwards, etc etc. That said, I actually quite enjoyed this book and enjoyed the author's voice within his narrative. He is a pretty witty writer for a sport's journalist and kept the pace flowing throughout the book. I was never bored reading. Despite the obvious bias against Ronaldo, it was interesting to read his life story from such a different perspective, that of a villain! It discusses many of the things I was curious about, such as, what was going on behind the scenes during pivotal moments of Ronaldo's career, especially in his early days. The author's mission to portray Ronaldo negatively, I think, often times works in Ronaldo's favor by showing his flaws and making him seem more like a human and less like a football cyborg.
