Sound for Film and Television

the most comprehensive text for this subject
I've purchased a few different books on this subject, and by far, this is the most comprehensive text of the bunch. From the basics of sound to sound recording and reproduction, down to finer details, such as the qualities of a variety of mic types, and positions, to the effects of various editing techniques, the differences between distortion types, etc.Tomlinson mixes the tech talk with layman terminology so you're not left scratching your head in confusion. While there's certainly a lot covered in this book, it seems to be done in a way that is digestible in small bites. The bonus features, for me, are the references to certain movies and their audio components, as well as the included DVD with a multitude of very helpful audio clips.I also appreciate that this is not written with the idea that the "analog is dead" mindset. Although much is covered regarding digital recording and techniques, there is still information relevant to analog recording that can also cross over into new territory.

better than college courses
I'm taking two sound classes in cinema now at lacc community College. The classes are only on but it's mostly basic information the teacher uses slides. This book is a lot better and gives way more information. I found the classes actually boring this semester. This book might be able to make me more interested in it. I was so happy to get it used from good will. They shipped it real quick I alreaey got it today. It even came with the cd and often used books wont!! So I'm very pleased!! It might be better than my courses!!

Great college textbook for students seeking a career in sound for film and television!
This was not really my kind of book. It had the feel of a college textbook, and the material included was as dense and boring as any college textbook I have ever read. The pages were big, the print was small, and the page formatting was double column. There were pictures included the same way as in a typical college textbook. The author teaches a class or classes in California at the college level. And it is my understanding he uses this book as the course textbook.I'm not in college any longer, and I haven't been there for some time. My reading preferences tend to weigh in positively with informative books that do not get too technical, but provide a lot of information and make good points. This book does not make many points at all. It is very technical. And quite frankly it does not provide much information that I could really use. Accordingly, I could not give it a 5-star rating.Having said all that, I found the book to be a good college textbook. If the student is working toward an entry-level position in the motion picture industry as a sound techie, then this book is probably a must-read. It covers a lot of material. It is quite dense in the material it provides. And the student if she digests and assimilates the information in this book will probably be able to fit into a production company or consulting firm that help to make sound in film and television great.Early in the book the author told me to read the chapters in the following order: 4, 8, 5-7, and 9-13. I took his advice and never went back to chapters 1-3. But I had already read the preface and the introduction. If you want to learn about much of the ins and outs of sound, microphones, and mixing sound recordings, or editing sound recordings so you can be the ultimate professional at what you do, then I highly recommend this book to you. But if you just want to know about sound regarding your camcorder projects and how to make it good or better, then this book might be a bit much for you. I did not see a way to translate what I read here into making better sound for my home videos. 4 stars!

Excellent sourcebook
While I am a student of sound and film, I find that this book covers much more than just the basics. The author goes into the physics of sound and uses actual examples from movies to demonstrate effects and how they can be used successfully. I am using it for a class, but this is one book I am glad was on the required list. Extremely good cost to benefit ratio!

Buy if your Advanced In Sound
This was a book I was suppose to have for a sound class in college. I sadly found out that after I had ordered it and rushed ordered it, that it was too far advanced for our class. With that being said, if you are someone who really wants to get deep into Sound Editing and really dive into editing professionally, then this book is right for you.

Great book
If you are in to the technical aspects of movie sound this is a great book. As a diehard home theater fanatic the info is very helpful and helps you understand why some movies sound very different than others. The CD attached to the back cover is also very helpful.

Convince your teacher to not use this book.
This book is horrible! No clear definitions for many of the key terms you need to know. I bought other books to get through my class and spent a lot of time online to define the terms I needed to know. The glossary is no help what so ever. Has some definitions but not all. I have never been more unimpressed with a book for school.
