A Feeding Favorite! Some Tips For Success In Review

This feeder was a terrific purchase. It does everything I'd hoped it would do: it's easy to clean; it's weighted enough to handle incoming birds; suet is easily accessible from both sides; construction is solid and it's weathered many storms; it's easy to fill; birds love it. Easy tips for success below.1. Place the feeder within a few inches (or feet) from where birds are actively feeding. Birds waiting for an open perch from a seed feeder will investigate this new one. Once a few show interest, more will follow their lead. After a week of this, gradually move it a few feet farther away, but still visible. The birds will look for it and it has an easily recognizable shape. My suet feeder now hangs in its own spot about 20 feet away from seed feeders, so it gives suet-loving birds their own space.2. Yes, squirrels will chew on it if they want food. Squirrels will chew through anything, and any bird feeder is susceptible. Remedy this with hot pepper suet cakes found everywhere: birds love it and it doesn't cause harm (no taste receptors for pepper). Squirrels cannot tolerate peppers (I'll say most; I suppose there are exceptions). I've never had a squirrel come back after smelling a pepper cake and I've watched them make wide berths around it to avoid getting it on their paws. I wear a cheap disposable glove when I replace cakes every 3-4 weeks so that I don't get pepper on my hands. It's definitely hot. I'd wear a glove anyway since suet is oily. Cakes are inexpensive (1.50 average) on Amazon. I only use Hot Pepper Delight No Melt Suet for feeders that are within jumping distance of squirrels. And if the feeder falls for some reason, you're not likely to find your dog eating the cake either. ("No melt" suet is also helpful in my hot climate, fyi.)3. Refilling with a new cake is easiest if you take the feeder down. It's done in seconds. The lid slides up the hanger cords and falls to the side, giving you quick access to drop a cake into the slot. If you try to fill it while it's still hanging, there's no place for the lid to move but up, so you'd have to lift the lid and angle the whole feeder sideways using both hands, which leave you no hands to hold the suet. I can see why this would be frustrating to other users. So take it down, pop the cake in, and hang it up. Super fast, super convenient. The body is solid. No warping, no rust, and easy to clean. The only thing I'd modify would be the attachment of the cord to the body. Mine has not broken, but other users have mentioned it. Ideally you'd have cords secured with heavier screws, but this isn't a handcrafted $50 feeder. However, it is a fantastic value. Again, my feeder shows no stress. But if I had to reattach a cord I'd still have confidence that I'll use this feeder for many years.Hope this helps!

Durable and well-made

I purchased this to replace one that only lasted about two weeks. The other was made of cedar wood, and the squirrels chewed through it in no time. This one is durable. However, in all honesty, I bought a squirrel baffle at the same time, and it is working beautifully to keep the squirrels off of it. Lest you feel sorry for the squirrels, I go through a big bag of peanuts every week feeding the little critters, so they get plenty to eat.The only suggestion I would have for improving this feeder is that the hanging loop be about 1 inch longer. I can't just lift up the lid and put in the suet cake, but have to take it down to fill it.

Best suet cage I've ever had

This is the best suet cage I have ever had. The only reason I give it a 4 instead of a 5 is that the squirrels were able to eat through part of the casing around the metal on both of the ones I originally ordered- that's as far as they got- it's a really sturdy product, but both of them are completely gnawed along the bottom. Having said that, the squirrels have not yet been able to steal the suet and the birds seem to love these. They can get at the suet from both sides. It is easy to fill and if you use a hose, easy to wash. All told I have ordered three and use them regularly.

Excellent Quality!

Just received this today. Very well made, the build quality is excellent. The grating is heavy duty and slides in a slot which is very secure. Should be very durable.Very pleased with this purchase! Don’t hesitate to purchase!

Sturdy and good quality

Very pleased with the material and the way this is put together - sturdy. The "recycled plastic" will make it much easier to keep clean. The tail plate (is that what it's called?) is nice and large for the bigger woodpeckers. A bit tricky getting the roof up to fit in the suet block but holds it nicely.

Great feeder very well made!

Great feeder the birds love it! Within minutes of hanging it up the woodpeckers were all over it. Great product I would definitely buy this again.

Perfect if you have woodpeckers

We have a lot of woodpeckers, and I already had one like this and the 'usual' small green cheap basket type. The woodpeckers definitely prefer this style, as it supports their tails. They are a lot more durable, as well.

Sturdy, simple feeder

In addition to the many birds that visit my feeders, I also have deer, squirrels and raccoons who like to sample the feed. The mammals have completely destroyed every other suet feeder I’ve had, but the composite feeder has so far survived any vandalism. I love watching the woodpeckers at this feeder, and the tail prop is large enough to encourage even the red-bellies to hang out for a while. This is a great, simple but sturdy feeder, and a bargain too.

Very well made, mostly bear proof! 🐻

I was so excited for this feeder, as last year I had lots of wood peckers coming to my other feeder, https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B003NTGXF6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1, but they either couldn't fit in it, or they'd have a hard time staying on it as it didn't have a tail prop.I decided on this one because it would be impervious to the weather and would stop my local squirrel population from ruining it, and it just looks really nice!Beautifully made super easy to fill and all the birds loved it. The overhang of the roof even protected the suet from the weather. It was great... Until the bear found it this week! Pulled it out of the tree ... But even considering that, it stood the test of the bear and was only slightly damaged and completely fixable, I can't even find a scratch or tooth mark on it. The Bear just pryed off one of the metal face frames, so now it's a bit bent. I'll just have to flatten it out in the vice or hammer it a bit.The other feeder , which i love for the little birds, didn't survive. It kept it's suet, only because we interrupted the bear, but is not salvageable! Such a shame, I really loved watching all the birds and it felt good feeding them in winter when times are tough. But now I know I can't feed birds at any time of the year. It's just not worth it in my neighborhood. Urban sprall has froced the bears into my backyard as I live on the edge of greenbelt, salmon bearing river. The climate is just too mild I don't think they are hibernating for as long as they used too.But if you don't have bears, get this feeder it's beautiful, well crafted, and it will surely stand the test of time, bringing you and the birds, pleasure for years to come!
