Wartime at Woolworths

Great reading book

Set in 1940's the author tells the story of extended family living during the war. Ruby had lost her husband but was now engaged to Bob, she was looking for a sign from her late husband whether she should marry Bob. Betty manager of a Woolworth store, married to Douglas, who had an undertaking business and 2 little girls, had to win the affection of them, which took time. Betty was working on the books for the business when she noticed things didn't add up, what was going on? Freda had to spend time away from the people she looked on as family to be with her mother who was gravely ill in hospital. How would these women fair, would each of them get a happy ending? A very enjoyable read.

again like Christmas at Woolworth, (see that review) I bought this in time to take with me on my cruise, and it was lovely to continue the saga of Woolies. Again we have fun, happiness. Is one of our friends expecting ? you will have to read it to find out. There is also some sadness too, due to the war. Again you will have to read the book to find out, as I am not going to put any spoilers in my review. It is another great read and I can well recommend it. Once again thanks to Elaine for the memories.

The third and for now, final book in the Woolworth girls trilogy, It seems that there may be a fourth book early next year.The Second World War is dragging on into it’s fourth year and the insecurity and shortages are taking their toll on our friends.Sarah, Masie, Freda, Betty and their families enjoy happiness and have to cope with great sorrow. There is not much to say without giving away the story, but if you enjoy superb story telling, with characters that you will care about and a hefty dose of nostalgia, treat yourself to this book. May be read as a stand-alone book, but I suggest that the three books are read in order. Highly recommended.

I have now read all five books and thoroughly enjoyed them. Didn't want to put them down as was eager to find out what was happening next. I too was a woollies girl part time whilst still at school in 1965 to 1966 and full time in the school holidays. I moved around to different counters adding up in my head as I was selling as the till didn't do it for you then so you had to be good at arithmetic. I have now lent the books to a friend with other friends waiting to read them.

I loved this book in common with the others in the series. It starts in November 1944 and we catch up with characters from the other books. Betty, the Woolworths Store Manager is now married to Douglas., Freda is in the Auxilliary Fire Service,Sarah and Alan are expecting another baby, David and Maisie are married, also their families and friends. It describes their difficulties etc during this time. I felt it was an excellent read and very well written and I have grown fond of the characters. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
